THE CELL PHONE PROJECT FAQs
Who can participate?
Anyone! Seriously, anyone. If you’re under 18, you just need a parent or guardian to sign off on the paperwork. Paperwork will be posted online soon.
How do I create a Cell Phone Project team?
Easy.
-
Find some people your trust (friends, family, classmates, colleagues, your neighbor's super cool cousin).
-
Pick a team name.
-
You can also show up at the Kickoff event and find a team that needs you.

I’ve never made a film before, and I’m terrified people will think it’s awful. Should I enter anyway?
First of all—yes. You should absolutely enter! Second, if you've ever posted a TikTok, IG Reel or Story, you’re already making video content. A ton of Cell Phone Project teams are first-timers, and this is your chance to just go for it. No one’s throwing rotten fruit (we promise).

What can my film be about?
Whatever you want! You pick the genre, write the script, and bring the vision to life! The only rule? You cannot start any creative work prior to the Kick-Off event on March 11.
What's stopping people from cheating and starting early?
We've got a built-in cheat code blocker: The Essential Elements. Every team receives a required character, line of dialogue, and prop at the Kick-Off event. These must be included in the film.
But honestly, the real reason? Honor. The Cell Phone Project is all about the challenge - and sticking to the seven day creative work window is all part of the fun. Keep it real. Keep it fair. And make something awesome!
Does my entire film have to be shot on a cell phone?
For The Cell Phone Project, 100% of your film footage must be shot on your cell phone - no fancy cameras, no exceptions. However, you can edit your film using any software you want. Whether you edit on your phone, tablet, or desktop, is totally up to you. Just make sure that every single shot comes from your mobile device.
Also, we're only accepting films that are human-made. No AI. We're not ready for the tech overlords to take over our precious film community yet. Line in the sand.
Does sound have to be from the phone's mic only?
External mics and other sound devices are allowed, so the sound does not have to come from the phone’s mic only.
